Overview
The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory and one of the world's leading offshore financial centres. It imposes zero direct taxation (no income, capital gains, corporate, property, or inheritance tax). There is no citizenship-by-investment programme, but a "Person of Independent Means" certificate grants residence for a substantial investment, and permanent residence (with a points system) is available after 8 years' lawful residence. [1]

- Duration / renewal: 2 years.

- Community verdict: Works well but niche (high income bar; only ~a few hundred issued).
Citizenship
Caymanians hold British Overseas Territories Citizenship (BOTC) and, since 2002, are typically also full British citizens. Naturalisation as BOTC is possible after 5 years' residence; full "Caymanian status" (right of abode) takes ~15 years. Dual citizenship is permitted. [6]
Tax
0% income tax, 0% capital gains, 0% corporate, 0% property, 0% inheritance — no direct taxes of any kind, for residents and non-residents. No double-tax treaties (nothing to double-tax). No annual tax filing. [7]
IT / Digital Nomad
The Global Citizen Concierge (see above) is Cayman's only remote-work route. Otherwise, remote workers must qualify via work permit or the Independent Means certificate (no work right).
Yacht / Maritime
Cayman is a major yacht-registration flag (Cayman Islands Shipping Registry, part of the UK Red Ensign group). George Town is a yachting and offshore-finance hub.
Notes for RU Citizens
No CBI; all routes require substantial capital (CI$1,200,000+ for Independent Means) or a sponsored job. 0% tax is the main draw. Enhanced compliance/source-of-funds scrutiny applies in this financial centre.
Community Pulse
Expat finance workers and wealthy retirees dominate discussion: the zero-tax environment and rule-of-law stability are praised; the 8-year work-permit clock and CI$1,200,000+ Independent Means threshold are the main barriers. Cost of living is very high.
Country Card
The Cayman Islands is a wealthy British Overseas Territory and a top-five global offshore financial centre, with a sophisticated common-law legal system and zero direct taxation. It is home to a large expatriate financial-services workforce and a smaller wealthy-retiree community attracted by residency-for-investment certificates.
Strong points
- Zero direct taxation (income, capital gains, corporate, inheritance)
- British legal system and BOTC/British citizenship route
- World-class offshore finance and funds industry
- Stable, safe, English-speaking
Known problems
- Very high cost of living and property prices
- High residency thresholds (CI$1,200,000–2,000,000) and 8-year PR clock
- Work-permit term limits; no general self-employment right
- Hurricane exposure
