Digital nomad visa — residence permits for remote workers employed by foreign companies or freelancing for foreign clients, performed via ICT. These are distinct from passive-income visas: active remote work is the defining feature (and typically the ONLY permitted work). Income thresholds range from ~$1,042/mo (Colombia) to €4,500/mo (Estonia). Some DN visas lead to permanent residency (Spain, Portugal); others are time-limited and non-renewable (Japan 6 months) or dead-end (Costa Rica 2 yr max).
Distinct from tourist visas: DN visas grant legal residence for remote work. The EU has emerged as the dominant bloc: Portugal D8, Spain DNV, Italy DNV, Greece DNV, Croatia DNV, Estonia DNV, Malta NRP are all active. Some notable absences: France banned remote work under visitor visa (Apr 2026); Germany has no dedicated DN visa.
