Overview
Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), the wealthiest economy in the Anglophone Caribbean (oil and gas), offers no citizenship or residence by investment. The pathway is conventional: work permit → 5 years' continuous lawful residence → permanent residence → naturalisation. Citizenship decisions are discretionary (Minister of National Security), not a right. [1]

Per-Program Detail
employment_residency
- Official name: Work Permit / Resident Status (Immigration Act, Ch. 18:01)
- Conditions: Valid job offer; permits renewed annually. After five continuous years of lawful residence, a person may apply for permanent residence (Section 5(3)/50(1) of the Immigration Act). [2]
- Duration / renewal: Work permit 1 year renewable; permanent residence indefinite.
- Path to citizenship: PR for 5 years → naturalisation (discretionary).
- Official source: https://nationalsecurity.gov.tt/appforms/residence
- Community verdict: Works well (clear legal route but slow and discretionary; no online portal).
family_reunification
- Official name: Sponsorship of spouse / parent / grandparent by a citizen or resident
- Conditions: Sponsor is a T&T citizen/resident; proof of relationship and support.
- Duration / renewal: Aligned with sponsor's status.
- Path to citizenship: Marriage to a citizen shortens the naturalisation clock.
- Official source: https://nationalsecurity.gov.tt/appforms/residence
- Community verdict: Works well for spouses of citizens.
Citizenship
Naturalisation requires good character, adequate English, intent to reside, 12 months' continuous residence immediately before application, plus 5 years' aggregate residence (or government service) within the preceding 7 years. Dual citizenship recognised since 1988. Grant is at the Minister's discretion. [3]
Tax
Personal income tax is progressive up to 25% (30% for very high earners); corporate tax ~30%. No capital gains tax. Territorial for foreign income in many cases. No special expat regime.
IT / Digital Nomad
No digital-nomad or remote-work visa. CARICOM/CSME skilled nationals can move freely, but there is no general remote-worker route.
Yacht / Maritime
Oil-and-gas-driven maritime economy (Point Lisas, Port of Spain). Chaguaramas is a yachting/boat-repair hub. Yacht registration available under the T&T flag.
Notes for RU Citizens
No fast track; standard work-permit route only. Crime in Port of Spain is a frequent expat concern (FH notes organised-crime violence). Naturalisation is discretionary, so outcomes are unpredictable even after qualifying periods.
Community Pulse
Expat forums describe T&T as economically comfortable (oil wealth) but procedurally slow: residence and naturalisation are discretionary, in-person (no online portal as of 2026), and can take years. The 5-year-residence → PR → 5-year-PR → citizenship ladder means a realistic ~10-year horizon.
Country Card
Trinidad and Tobago is the industrial and financial hub of the Anglophone Caribbean, with a diversified oil-and-gas economy and one of the region's highest incomes per capita. It is a parliamentary democracy (republic since 1976) with a multi-ethnic population of African and Indian descent.
