IT / Digital Nomad

The digital nomad residence permit (Nov 2025) is Slovenia's newest route — €3,377.10/mo income threshold. Ljubljana is a growing tech hub with a high quality of life. Excellent location — Alps + Adriatic, borders Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia. Fast internet, EU digital infrastructure. The company registration route is popular among IT professionals.

Yacht / Maritime

Short Adriatic coastline (~47 km — one of the smallest). Small marina infrastructure (Portorož, Izola, Koper). Yacht registration under Slovenian flag available but limited. Not a primary yachting destination.

Notes for RU Citizens

Russian citizens need a Schengen visa. The DN visa and company registration route are formally open but face enhanced scrutiny. Slovenian language (South Slavic, similar to Croatian/Serbian) is moderately accessible for Russian speakers. Small Russian-speaking community. No special RU restrictions beyond standard EU measures.

Country Card

Slovenia is an EU/Schengen/Eurozone member at the crossroads of the Alps, the Mediterranean, and Central Europe. It is one of the EU's highest-scoring democracies (Freedom House 96/100) with strong rule of law, but citizenship is among the hardest to obtain: 10 years of residence, Slovene language proficiency, and renunciation of previous citizenship generally required. Its digital nomad permit (since November 2025) is new and has a limited track record. The company registration route (d.o.o., €7,500 minimum capital) is a popular alternative for self-employed professionals.

Strong points

  • One of the EU's highest Freedom House scores (96/100) and strongest rule-of-law environments
  • High quality of life: Alpine nature, compact size, excellent infrastructure
  • EU Blue Card and company registration route provide stable paths to residence
  • Strategic location bordering Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia
  • Clean, safe, and well-organized — consistently among the EU's most livable countries
  • Digital Nomad permit launched November 2025 — new but promising option

Known problems

  • 10-year citizenship path — one of the EU's longest
  • Dual citizenship generally not permitted — renunciation of previous citizenship required
  • Slovene language requirement for citizenship — a South Slavic language with limited utility outside Slovenia
  • Digital Nomad permit does not lead to permanent residence or citizenship
  • Short Adriatic coastline (~47 km); limited maritime infrastructure
  • High top marginal tax rate (50%) for high earners; social contributions add ~22%
