Overview

Slovakia is an EU/Schengen/Eurozone member in Central Europe with a growing automotive and IT sector. Immigration is managed by the Foreign Police (Cudzinecká polícia). The primary route for skilled non-EU workers is the EU Blue Card (5 years validity). Slovakia does NOT offer a dedicated digital nomad visa, golden visa, or passive-income residence. Citizenship requires 8 years of permanent residence. [1]

No labor market test since July 2024 (employer must still report vacancy but confirmation not required for Blue Card). Fee: €250 application + €10–39 card issuance. [2]
  • Duration / renewal: 5 years (or contract duration + 90 days if shorter). Processing: 30 days from complete application. [3]
  • Path to citizenship: After 5 years residence → permanent residence → citizenship at 8 years total PR. [4]
  • Official source: https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies/migration-and-asylum/eu-immigration-portal/eu-blue-card/eu-blue-card-slovakia_en
  • Community verdict: Works well — 5-year card is the longest Blue Card validity in the EU. Processing is fast (30 days).

Employment Residency — Standard Work Permit

  • Conditions: Job offer from Slovak employer. Labor market test (employer reports vacancy to Labour Office). Valid for 6 months to 2 years.
  • Duration / renewal: Up to 2 years, renewable.
  • Path to citizenship: 5 years → permanent residence → citizenship at 8 years PR.
  • Official source: https://www.minv.sk/?naturalizacia
  • Community verdict: Works well — standard Schengen process, slower than Blue Card.

Startup / Entrepreneur — Trade License

  • Official name: Živnostenský list → prechodný pobyt na účel podnikania
  • Conditions: Register a trade license (živnosť). Proof of funds (~€2,500–5,000 depending on trade). Business plan. Accommodation.

  • Path to citizenship: After 5 years residence → PR → citizenship.
  • Official source: https://www.minv.sk/?zivnostnici
  • Community verdict: Works well — common self-employment route, but requires Slovak-language setup.

Citizenship

  • Standard: 8 consecutive years of permanent residence [5]
  • Marriage to Slovak: 5 years living together in Slovakia [6]
  • 10 years continuous residence (any status) + current PR
  • Born in Slovakia: 3 years PR before application
  • Asylum holders: 4 years
  • Language: Slovak proficiency (oral + written) + general knowledge test [7]
  • Dual citizenship: NOT generally permitted — applicants must renounce previous citizenship unless by birth or marriage [8]

Tax

  • Progressive income tax: 19% (up to ~€41,500) / 25% above
  • Social + health contributions: ~13.4% employee
  • Corporate tax: 21% (15% for small businesses up to €49,790 revenue)
  • Dividend tax: 7%

IT / Digital Nomad

Slovakia has NO dedicated digital nomad visa. IT professionals primarily use:

  • EU Blue Card — fast (30 days), 5-year validity, no labor market test
  • Trade license — for freelancers and self-employed

Bratislava and Košice are the main tech hubs. IT salaries are competitive with Central European peers.

Yacht / Maritime

Not applicable — Slovakia is landlocked.

Notes for RU Citizens

Russian citizens need a Schengen visa. Blue Card and work permit routes are formally open but face enhanced scrutiny. Slovak language requirement for citizenship is demanding (B1+ level). Small Russian-speaking community, mostly in Bratislava. Slovakia's political stance toward Russia is aligned with EU/NATO.

Country Card

Slovakia is a landlocked EU/Schengen/Eurozone member in Central Europe with a strong automotive manufacturing sector and growing IT industry. It offers the EU's longest Blue Card validity (5 years) with fast 30-day processing and no labor market test since July 2024. There is no dedicated digital nomad visa, but the trade license (živnosť) route provides a self-employment path. Citizenship requires 8 years of permanent residence plus Slovak language proficiency, and dual citizenship is generally not permitted. Slovakia adopted the euro in 2009 and has one of the EU's most competitive tax systems: 19% flat rate up to ~€41,500.

Strong points

  • EU Blue Card with 5-year validity — the longest in the EU; 30-day processing
  • Flat income tax: 19% up to ~€41,500, 25% above; 7% dividend tax
  • No labor market test for Blue Card since July 2024
  • Low cost of living (58% below NYC); competitive rent in Bratislava
  • Eurozone member; strong automotive and manufacturing export base
  • Central European location; good connectivity to Vienna, Budapest, Prague

Known problems

  • No dedicated digital nomad or passive-income visa — limited options for remote workers
  • 8 years of permanent residence for citizenship (effectively ~13 years total from arrival)
  • Slovak language proficiency required for citizenship — a West Slavic language
  • Dual citizenship generally not permitted — renunciation required
  • Landlocked — no coastline; no yachting infrastructure
  • Trade license route requires Slovak-language business setup
