Recent changes
Decree 366/2025 (May 2025) — tightened residency continuity, citizenship processing moved to DNM. Decree 524/2025 (July 2025) — CBI framework. SMVM minimum wage updates alter Rentista thresholds periodically.

Overview

Argentina's immigration is managed by the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (DNM). Argentina offers one of the fastest citizenship paths in the Americas — 2 continuous years of legal residence. The main residency routes are the Rentista (passive income), Pensionado (retiree), Investor, and the Digital Nomad Visa (180 + 180 days). A Citizenship by Investment program (USD 500,000) is expected to launch in late 2026 under Decree 524/2025. Decree 366/2025 (May 2025) tightened residency requirements significantly. [1]

Per-Program Detail

investment_residency

  • Official name: Residencia Temporaria — Inversionista (Art. 23, Ley 25.871)
  • Conditions: Statutory minimum ARS 1,500,000 (~$2,000 USD). In practice, productive investment via SUACE from ~$70,000 USD with business plan and local employment. Real estate investment may also qualify. [2]
  • Duration / renewal: 1-year temporary, renewable. Permanent residency after 3 years.
  • Path to citizenship: 2 continuous years (without exits) from establishment of any legal residency; permanent residency not required before citizenship application.
  • Official source: https://www.argentina.gob.ar/migraciones
  • Community verdict: Mixed (the statutory threshold is absurdly low but practical enforcement varies; SUACE track is more reliable).

passive_income_residency

  • Official name: Rentista (Art. 23(d), Ley 25.871)
  • Conditions: Passive income ≥ 5× Argentine minimum wage (SMVM). At May 2026 SMVM ARS 363,000: ~$1,500/mo USD. Income from rentals, dividends, royalties, annuities from abroad. Must be transferred through authorized banking channels. [3]
  • Duration / renewal: 1 year, renewable up to 3 years. Permanent residency after 3 years.
  • Path to citizenship: 2 continuous years of residence (any legal category).
  • Official source: https://www.argentina.gob.ar/migraciones
  • Community verdict: Works well (low threshold; the 2-year citizenship clock is the main attraction).

  • Duration / renewal: 180 days, renewable once for another 180 days (360 days max). This is a transitory residence — does NOT count toward permanent residency or citizenship clock.
  • Path to citizenship: Not direct; must switch to Rentista or other temporary category to start the 2-year clock.
  • Official source: https://ctoro.cancilleria.gob.ar/en/visa-digital-nomads

Tax

  • Residency trigger: 183+ days in any 12-month period, or center of vital interests, or Argentine residency card.
  • Tax residents: Worldwide income taxed at progressive rates 5%–35%.
  • No territorial system: Argentina taxes worldwide income.
  • Milei administration: Tax simplification and potential flat-tax reforms under discussion; not enacted as of mid-2026.

IT / Digital Nomad

Argentina's DN visa is cheap and fast but short (360 days max) and does not lead to residency. Buenos Aires is the primary hub with a large expat/nomad community and solid coworking infrastructure. Internet is good in BA, variable elsewhere. Inflation is a major concern and distorts costs; the USD blue rate provides significant arbitrage for foreign income earners.

Yacht / Maritime

Atlantic coastline from Buenos Aires to Patagonia. Major ports: Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, Ushuaia. Yacht registration possible but limited superyacht infrastructure. Ushuaia is a gateway to Antarctica.

Notes for RU Citizens

Russian passport holders are visa-free for tourist entry (90 days). Rentista and Pensionado routes accessible. Consulates in Moscow (limited operations), Istanbul, Dubai. No special restrictions beyond standard requirements. Buenos Aires has a Russian-speaking community. Argentine banks may require DNI (residency card) for account opening.

Community Pulse

Argentina's 2-year citizenship timeline is among the fastest globally and is the primary draw. Decree 366/2025's "no exits" rule is the biggest recent tightening — applicants must plan for 2 continuous years in-country. The DN visa is a useful short-term bridge but not a path to citizenship. Inflation and economic instability remain the main practical concerns. The pending CBI program, if launched at $500,000, would be a game-changer.

Country Card

Argentina is the second-largest country in South America, stretching from the subtropics to Patagonia. It has a highly educated population, a European-influenced culture, and one of the fastest citizenship paths in the world — 2 continuous years of legal residence. The economy has been plagued by chronic inflation and currency crises, but the parallel (blue) dollar exchange rate provides significant purchasing power for foreign-income residents. Buenos Aires is a major cultural capital with strong infrastructure for expats and digital nomads.

Strong points

  • Fastest citizenship path in the Americas: 2 continuous years (no minimum for spouses of Argentines)
  • MERCOSUR mobility — Argentine citizens enjoy residency rights across South America
  • Strong passport (170 visa-free destinations, Henley rank 16)
  • Low effective cost of living for USD/EUR earners at the parallel (blue) exchange rate
  • Buenos Aires is a world-class city with European architecture, culture, and healthcare
  • Rentista income threshold among the lowest in the region (~$1,500/mo)

Known problems

  • Chronic inflation (100%+ annually) — prices, contracts, and salaries in constant flux
  • Decree 366/2025: ANY exit during 2-year citizenship qualifying period can reset the clock
  • Digital nomad visa is a dead-end: 360 days max, does NOT count toward citizenship
  • Worldwide taxation with no territorial option — foreign income fully taxable for residents
  • Currency controls and parallel exchange rate create practical FX friction
  • CBI program (Decree 524/2025) promised but not yet operational as of mid-2026
