Overview

Myanmar's immigration framework separates an entry visa, a Stay Permit (right to remain), and a Work Permit (right to work), all largely employer- or investment-sponsored via the Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) or the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population. There is no golden visa, nomad visa, or retirement program, and permanent residence for foreigners is extremely restricted (2014 rules). The 1982 Citizenship Law makes naturalization effectively closed to new entrants, and dual citizenship is not recognized. [1]

Per-Program Detail

investment_residency

Myanmar has no investment-residence or golden-visa program. The Permanent Residence of a Foreigner Rules (Notification 1/2014) provide a PR framework but issuance is rare and discretionary; PR does not lead to citizenship. [2]

highly_skilled_employment

  • Official name: Employment visa + Stay Permit
  • Conditions: Job offer; the employer (via MIC or MoLIP) sponsors the work permit and stay permit; foreign-worker quota applies.
  • Duration / renewal: Employment visa ~70 days; Stay Permit 3–12 months, renewable.
  • Official source: https://www.dica.gov.mm/
  • Community verdict: Mixed — bureaucratic, quota-bound, and heavily affected by the post-2021 political situation.

startup_entrepreneur

  • Official name: Business visa (70-day)
  • Conditions: Business purpose and local invitation.
  • Duration / renewal: 70 days, extendable.
  • Official source: https://www.dica.gov.mm/
  • Community verdict: Limited — not a settlement route.

employment_residency

  • Official name: Employment visa + Work Permit + Stay Permit
  • Conditions: Job offer; work permit via MIC, MoLIP, or SEZ authority; Stay Permit for the right to remain; multiple re-entry visa for travel. [3]
  • Duration / renewal: Typically 1 year, renewable (stay permit fees US$50–200 by duration).
  • Official source: https://www.dica.gov.mm/
  • Community verdict: Works for corporate/NGO postings but administratively heavy.

student_residency

  • Official name: Student visa
  • Conditions: Admission to recognized institution.
  • Duration / renewal: Course duration.
  • Official source: https://www.dica.gov.mm/
  • Community verdict: Limited.

family_reunification

  • Official name: Social/dependant visa
  • Conditions: Family tie to a resident or citizen.
  • Duration / renewal: Tied to sponsor.
  • Official source: https://www.dica.gov.mm/
  • Community verdict: Limited.

citizenship_by_investment

Not available.

Citizenship

  • Naturalization: Effectively closed to new foreign entrants. The 1982 Citizenship Law provides citizenship by descent, associate citizenship, and naturalized citizenship, but naturalization is discretionary and tightly restricted; marriage alone does not confer eligibility. [4]
  • Dual citizenship: Not recognized.
  • Practical reality: Foreigners cannot realistically obtain Myanmar citizenship; PR (where granted) does not lead to it.

Tax

  • Individual income tax: Progressive 0%–25% on residents; non-residents taxed on Myanmar-source income. [5]
  • Tax residency: 183 days in the income year.
  • No special nomad regime.

IT / Digital Nomad

No digital-nomad visa. Internet access is restricted and unreliable; foreign remote workers have no legal residence route. Myanmar is not a nomad destination.

Yacht / Maritime

Coastline on the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal; commercial ports at Yangon and Thilawa. Recreational yachting is essentially absent; foreign yachts face heavy restrictions. Not a yachting destination.

Notes for RU Citizens

Visa required; e-visa (business/tourist) available in principle but operations are limited post-2021. Banking and remittances are severely restricted (sanctions and domestic controls). Not a practical destination for RU relocants in 2026.

Community Pulse

Myanmar is effectively not a relocation market. Since the 2021 coup and ongoing conflict, foreign business presence has contracted sharply, and most expats have departed. Residence is limited to employer-sponsored postings (NGOs, remaining corporates). No meaningful community of independent relocants or nomads.

Country Card

Myanmar (Burma) is a Southeast Asian nation on the Bay of Bengal, rich in resources but devastated by the 2021 military coup and ensuing civil conflict. It offers no investment, nomad, or retirement residence programs; long-term stay is employer-sponsored and heavily restricted, permanent residence is rare, and naturalization is effectively closed.

Strong points

  • Low cost of living
  • Rich cultural heritage and natural resources
  • Strategic location between South and Southeast Asia
  • (Historically) business opportunity in extractives and infrastructure

Known problems

  • Ongoing civil conflict and political instability since 2021 (Freedom House 4/100)
  • No residence-by-investment, nomad, or retirement visa
  • Permanent residence rare; naturalization effectively closed; no dual citizenship
  • Severe restrictions on banking, remittances, and internet
  • Weak rule of law and weak passport
