Overview

Cameroon is a bilingual (French/English) Central African state on the Gulf of Guinea, with the region's most diversified economy. Dual nationality is not permitted. [1]

employment_residency — Work Permit + Carte de Séjour

  • Duration / renewal: 1–2 years, renewable, tied to the contract.
  • Path to citizenship: 5 years lawful residence (Nationality Code 1968). [3]
  • Official source: https://minfopra.gov.cm (Ministry of Public Service) / Délégation Générale à la Sûreté Nationale (DGSN)
  • Community verdict: Mixed — bureaucratic; both French and English are used in administration.

investment_residency — Investor route

  • Official name: Investment Charter residence facilitation (API — Agence de Promotion des Investissements)
  • Conditions: Registered company; API facilitates residence permits for investors and executives. No fixed public minimum widely published.
  • Duration / renewal: 1–2 years, renewable.
  • Path to citizenship: 5 years residence.
  • Official source: https://www.investincameroon.cm

Citizenship

  • Residence requirement: 5 years lawful residence for naturalisation (Cameroon Nationality Code, Law 1968-LF-3). [4]
  • Language: French or English (working knowledge; no formal test).
  • Dual citizenship: Not permitted — acquiring another nationality is grounds for denaturalisation. [5]

  • Residence-based; tax resident if habitual abode or >183 days.
  • Personal income tax (IRPP): progressive up to 35%.
  • Corporate tax: 30% standard. VAT: 19.25%.
  • No special expat flat-tax regime; regional CEMAC tax harmonisation.

IT / Digital Nomad

No digital-nomad visa. Douala and Yaoundé have growing tech scenes and 4G/LTE, but remote workers generally enter via employer sponsorship or investor permits. Bilingual French/English is an asset.

Yacht / Maritime

Atlantic coastline (Gulf of Guinea) with the port of Douala — Central Africa's main gateway. Limited leisure-yacht infrastructure; not a yachting destination.

Notes for RU citizens

Visa required. Cameroon maintains working relations with Russia. French is the primary administrative language (English in the Anglophone regions). Small expat community, concentrated in Douala/Yaoundé. Dual citizenship is not available to naturalised Russians.

Community pulse

Limited English-language expat forum data. Expat presence is concentrated in infrastructure, oil and NGOs. No significant digital-nomad community; immigration is reported as slow and document-heavy.

Country Card

Cameroon is a bilingual Central African country on the Gulf of Guinea, often called "Africa in miniature" for its geographic and cultural diversity. It has one of the most diversified economies in the region (agriculture, oil, timber, services). Immigration is employment- and investment-led. Citizenship by naturalisation requires only 5 years of residence, but dual nationality is prohibited.

Strong points

  • Short 5-year path to citizenship
  • Bilingual French/English administration — flexible for expats
  • Diversified economy with a genuine private sector (Douala hub)
  • Investment Charter facilitates investor residence
  • Central Africa's main port (Douala)

Known problems

  • Dual citizenship is NOT permitted
  • Freedom House 15/100 (Not Free); weak rule of law (WJP rank 134/142)
  • Bureaucratic, slow immigration administration
  • Anglophone crisis in the Northwest/Southwest regions
  • No digital-nomad or passive-income visa
  • Low median incomes and limited consumer market
