> Source: https://residencyradar.org/conditions/tanzania.html | Last checked: 2026-10-12 | Last updated: 2026-09-13

## Overview
Tanzania offers two main residence permit classes: Class A (investors/self-employed) and Class B (employees). The Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) facilitates investor permits. There is no dedicated digital nomad visa, no retirement visa, and no citizenship-by-investment programme. Citizenship is by presidential grant only — extremely rare for foreigners. Dual citizenship is not permitted. ^[https://www.immigration.go.tz/index.php/residence-permit-class-a]

- Dual citizenship: NOT permitted. ^[https://www.immigration.go.tz]
- Passport: visa-free access to ~70 destinations.

- Personal income tax: progressive 9%–30% (top rate on TZS 8,400,000+/month).

## IT / Digital Nomad
No dedicated DN visa. Dar es Salaam is the commercial hub; Arusha is the safari/tourism centre; Zanzibar (Stone Town) is popular for remote work lifestyle. Internet: 4G/LTE widely available, fibre in urban areas. Co-working spaces in Dar (Regus, Colab). Cost of living: low-moderate. Remote workers typically enter on tourist visas (90 days, extendable) — this is a grey area, not formally authorised for remote work.

## Yacht / Maritime
Tanzania has an Indian Ocean coastline (Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar). Zanzibar is a popular cruising destination. The Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) handles vessel registration. Dar es Salaam Yacht Club and Zanzibar Yacht Club exist. Limited superyacht infrastructure.

## Country Card

The United Republic of Tanzania, formed by the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, is East Africa's largest country by land area and one of its most politically stable. It's a premier safari destination (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro) with a long Indian Ocean coastline including the semi-autonomous Zanzibar archipelago. Dar es Salaam is the commercial hub. The immigration system is functional but citizenship is virtually closed to foreigners.

### Well-known strong points
- Political stability — one of Africa's most peaceful nations; regular peaceful transitions of power
- World-class safari tourism and Zanzibar's cultural appeal
- Swahili is a unifying national language spoken across the population
- Low cost of living by global standards
- Class A investor permits available (USD 100,000+ via TIC)
- Zanzibar operates a separate immigration regime, offering additional flexibility

### Well-known problems
- Citizenship is by presidential grant only — effectively closed to foreigners; dual citizenship not permitted
- No digital nomad visa, no retirement visa — limited residency options
- Bureaucracy can be slow and opaque; Zanzibar's separate system adds complexity
- Personal income tax up to 30% for high earners
- Internet connectivity and infrastructure are improving but still below East African leaders
- Limited pathway for long-term residence beyond employer-sponsored or investor permits
